Flower Children
I guess I was a little out of step
with all the hipsters of my generation.
O, I loved the Beatles just as much as any;
hated the war that split apart our nation.
But I confess that I did not smoke pot,
nor march in protest, filled with rightous passion.
My bra I did not burn in public forum:
practicality won, over cause or fashion.
My mate and I had married in our youth;
now life had more immediate concern:
like, how to feed a family on a budget,
and provide a home on little we could earn.
And so, we did not join with Woodstock's pilgrims;
wear sandals, beads, or flowers behind our ears.
We weren't exactly hippie flower-children.
Our own children were our flowers in those years.

About the Book
Come with me on a journey through space and time; to various places on earth and out of it; to places as easily accessed as your own back yard, and places that can only be reached deep in the memory or the soul. Take my hand, let's begin...
This collection of poems, written over the span of some years, comprises an autobiography of sorts: each one has special meaning to me or addresses some aspect of my life. I wrote them as a legacy for my children and grandchildren, but I believe they speak to a much larger audience about the universal themes of relationships, family, the wonders of nature, and the questions we humans have concerning the meaning of it all. From this you might think that this is a very serious tome, but such is not the case. Quite a few of the poems are lighthearted in nature; and I attempted to endow all of them with a lyrical quality that makes for easy reading. I hope you will now accompany me on my journeys in verse.
About the Author
Born in Denver, Colorado, Sylvia Martinez spent her youth enjoying the mile-high city and surrounding mountains with friends and family. Landing the position as reporter on her school newspaper and editor of the yearbook gave early promise of a budding journalism career; but it was put on indefinite hold as marriage and the arrival of children intervened. Though the demands of daily life took up most of the hours of the day, Sylvia often found a few minutes to jot down random thoughts and verses. Having lived in New Mexico for a few years, and in southern Nevada for many, she also traveled widely throughout the country. Now that she and her husband are both retired, they plan more travel in the future; and Sylvia plans to continue writing and publishing.
