We saw a shiny piece of metal leaning against some rubble as we passed by what used to be the front of the building. Maggie and I stopped to look at our reflections. We both weren’t dark anymore—my head had streaks all over it. I was sure it was the blood I had tasted in my mouth from before. We both had cuts on our paws and legs. I kept looking into that shiny piece of metal to see if maybe Kate was in it too.
I felt a sudden sickness pass into my body—it was choking me. I dropped my Kong, gagged, and threw up. Maggie licked the side of my head and then sat down next to me and pressed her chin hard onto the middle of my back.
A human walking by in front of us was covered with the same white stuff as us. He stopped and lifted a box from his side to his eye. Suddenly a bright light from it shot toward us. It didn't touch us, and was only there for an instant. Maggie and I jumped back and twisted our heads to the side. It didn't hurt. It just surprised us.

Join Tomi Krugel as he shares his adventures of working as a law enforcement cadaver dog for the New York Fire Department and the Los Angeles Police Department in his new book, "The K-9 Chronicles: Book Two - the journey ... the pack heroics continue".
This book is the second in a series of six fictional books inspired by real-life K-9s and events in their lives. Each book focuses on the story of a different law enforcement K-9 that is scheduled to be euthanized, but then saved by Jake, a former LAPD cop with a mysterious and troubled past.
"The tragedy of 911 created terror in the minds and hearts of all Americans. It resulted in the grief not only on our soil but throughout the world. It also rekindled the spirit of America and produced a gut-wrenching display of heroism by many. Very few of us have ever looked at these emotions and conduct coming from other than human beings. However, K-9 units from across America came to the World Trade Center and displayed these same feelings and qualities, exceeding everyone's expectations. Beyond a doubt I feel in my heart that these K-9s sensed the tragedy, felt the pain that was all around them, cried for the losses they saw, and displayed the heroic work ethic the same as we human beings did. It didn't matter if they were seaching for the remains of a victim, a person who was missing, or following the perilous orders of their handler in the burning reaches of the devastation. Theirs are the names that we did not, do not and probably will never hear. God bless them."

About the Author
Tomi is the author of The K-9 Chronicles: Book Two – the journey ... pack heroics continue. This is his first endeavor as a writer and is following in the paw prints of his brother, Serpico Wolfgang Krugel. His other brother and sister are also writing their own special stories—their words, as Tomi’s will and Serpico’s has, will “hug your soul from the inside out”.
Tomi lives in Pasadena, California with his two brothers and sister, who are all working K-9s. Tomi knows first hand that America lost many things on 9/11 … but he feels it was very important to have humans know what happened from his point of view as a K-9.
As he said to Alan … “… everyone has stories. When they pass on, those stories can pass on with them and be lost forever. I want you to salvage my story for America’s sake; it is not a story that should die.”
