Dogspeare

I found myself in an untilled field about a mile from the city. I placed the Machine on the ground where it would be hidden by the weeds and long grass. My nostrils were assailed by a stench that grew stronger as I approached London. I soon discovered it to be emanating from streets filled with fly-covered garbage that had attracted hordes of rats and mangy dogs. To the east I could observe the massive walls of the Tower while directly ahead of me was, unmistakably, the Globe Theater. A fruit-seller was standing at the theater entrance and I asked her if she knew where I could find the playwright William Shakespeare. "He lodges thither beside the Bear Howse," she said, pointing out a nearby place of entertainment. There was no bell or knocker so I tapped loudly at the door with the knob of my walking-stick."
