Dar, for almost a thousand years, had not thought of himself as an individual but as the ship Tal Nan. This Aat’Lan observation ship was more than a mile long and had just entered our solar system. When the observation fleet rotated their tour of duty, hundreds of ships were relieved at the same time.

The Aat’Lan race was composed of long-lived individuals. A normal lifespan was more than five hundred years. Dar had been less than 110 when he was critically injured and his brain was extracted and integrated as the Organic Counselor (OC) for the observation ship Tal Nan.

The Aat’Lans used people of their own race as the control over an organic type of network made up of hundreds of “inferior” life-form brains, these “inferior” brains were used like computer chips in an electronic computer.

Many of the races the Aat’Lans enslaved were superior to the Aat’Lans in technology. The Aat’Lans stole this technology for their use, just because a race had something more advanced than the Aat’Lan meant nothing. The fact the Aat’Lan could enslave that race naturally made them inferior.

At 110 Dar had barely finished his education and training and was on his first assignment. His life as an individual person was abruptly terminated during a conflict between primitive native races on Earth.  Neither Dar nor the Aat’Lan race understood the earth natives, even after thousands of years of observation, an attempt to colonize earth, and having taken millions of natives for study and slaves.

On each world the Aat’Lans conquered, they implanted the brains of natives with an invasive system of fine wires, this system allowed the ship organic counselor (OC) in orbit to control implanted individuals.

The Aat’Lan race was not troubled or confused by emotions. This was why they found the natives almost impossible to understand or predict.  How could any logical intelligent being understand such chaos!  In the Aat’Lan initial occupation they started a colony on a small continent they called “Aat’Lan” in the middle of the planet’s largest ocean. As the centuries progressed, the Aat’Lan colony covered the entire continent becoming one huge city. By now the Aat’Lans had bred hundreds of thousands of natives to maintain all of their power stations and transportation networks and carry out any technical or manual task the occupying force felt was beneath the dignity of superior beings.

Twelve thousand years ago, the natives were living almost like the animals of the planet—with one major difference. These natives were the most successful and adaptive killers on the planet!  Aat’Lan breeding programs made the natives more pleasing to the eye and intelligent.  But the natives retained their skills as killers and being survival-oriented, they also became very sly about their plans to destroy the Aat’Lan “Masters.”

Our ancestors’ thousands of years ago destroyed the Aat’Lan colony!  Since then the Aat’Lan have been an orbital force and still steal our people and resources.

 Recently Dar abducted an eminent Earth scientist for a new experiment to implant them with the true history of earth and Aat’Lan tech.  Could these natives possibly be of greater use to the Aat’Lan by developing new technology?

This would turn out to be a greater disaster then the original destruction of the entire Aat’Lan continent and their occupational forces!
