    "After you, mate!" Mr. Carter waved cheerfully from behind the wheel of his car to a cyclist waiting to pull out at a junction. He smiled as he did so and continued smiling even when his gesture received no acknowledgement in return. The situation was unusual, for Mr. Carter was often impatient when driving and subscribed to the view he had absorbed from several sources in the media that cyclists were amongst the lowest ranked groups of the population. He didn't agree that they deserved to be singled out for persecution though, believing that other groups such as immigrants and gypsies were worthy of it as well.
