A Plea for the Renewal of America
All Americans must become aware of the problem of the abuse of the disability system and become active in the elimination of those who are cheating the system.
It will not be solved unless Americans want it to be and eliminate the abuse! “Eliminate laziness as it breeds, the mental alertness to avoid hard work.” (25, p. 323)
The famous Hippocrates:
“Life is short, art is long, the opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult.” (6, p. 73)
Work for the male is a natural activity. God put Adam in the Garden of Eden and told him to work it. (Genesis 2:15) This was before man sinned when the devil enticed Eve to eat of the “tree of knowledge” and she enticed Adam to do the same. Apparently man’s destiny was to spend all his days working in the garden. To “dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return.” (Genesis 3:19) This does not say that man’s mortality is the result of disobedience. He was made from dust as a mortal creature who with time would return to dust. As a spirit or soul we were known before we were born and are as a soul eternal (Jeremiah 1:5; Isaiah 49:1), but our bodies were created to be mortal.
Attention all Americans! We are slowly being destroyed by people who do not work. The politicians in both parties cannot act because it would cause a loss of votes and thus the loss of their jobs. Robert J. Samuelson in his article notes that in 1956 the federal budget spent 60% on national defense and 22% on payments to individuals who were not working. In 2006 amazingly the figures are reversed with 20% being spent on national defense and 60% on payments to non-working individuals. We are an infected welfare country. We must wake up!

Society becomes strained and inefficient when there are large numbers of people not working for the common good.
The psychological effects of malingering can be horrible. It destroys an individual as a person. He has fallen into a trap and has been enslaved by a generous system, which is quite easy to defraud.
It is a rare person who under proper conditions will not accept a hand out from the government or big business. There are also people who will starve to death before they will accept charity. It should be made very clear that every American I know believes in giving all the aid possible to people with real disability and even more than is available.
Many people have the mentality of believing that they are entitled to welfare from the big government if they decide they want it.
The question must be asked, “Is it fair to society and to the patient in particular to provide him with ‘eating bread’ of idleness when it has been obtained by fraud?” Eating the bread of society by lying is sinning against God and society. Doctors and lawyers, are you also sinning against God and society when you knowingly, falsely or ignorantly help a person get undeserved money from the government or big business?
About the Author
Rear Admiral Joseph H. Miller (MC) USNR retired from the United States Navy Reserve in 1986 after 30 years. At retirement RADM Miller completed three years as the first reservist to serve as a Deputy Surgeon General for Reserve Affairs (OP093R), Pentagon. While on active duty he served as Chief of Neurosurgery, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. As a consultant to the Surgeon General RADM Miller chaired a committee of five prominent civilian leaders of neurosurgery to develop a Navy neurosurgical residency. He served in the Joint Chiefs of Staff (J4) and a Flag officer billet was established in J4.
RADM Miller’s Military decorations include: Legion of Merit, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, and Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V.
In civilian life RADM Miller is a neurosurgeon and served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Methodist Hospital, Memphis, and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery University of Tennessee and University of Tennessee Training Director in Neurosurgery at the Methodist University Hospital. (1983-2000)
RADM Miller was Founder and Director of the Memphis Neurosciences Center at Methodist Hospital and the University of Tennessee. He is on the Voluntary Faculty of USF Medical School.
RADM Miller is certified by the American Board of Neurosurgery and his memberships include: The American Association of Neurological Surgeons, The Society of Neurological Surgeons. He also served on the Boards of Union University, Mars Hill College, Samford University, and Regions Bank.
RADM Miller has been a Southern Baptist Deacon for 53 years, and taught Sunday School for thirty years. He is currently a member of First Baptist Church, Brandon, Florida. He is a 4,500-hour pilot and recently passed the course to be a Coast Guard Captain. He is married to Cathy Miller and they live in Apollo Beach, Florida.
