A cold draft crept through the open window. Why was it opened? Teffy didn’t open it. She shivered harshly, awakened by the noise that rose through the gaps in the floorboards. She could hear the daily ruckus of the saloon below. She sat on the edge of the bed quietly listening for a moment. Some exciting commotion was brought in with the opening of the tavern door.
“What happened to you, Jorge?” She heard Bill thunder in amazement. The door slammed, followed by what sounded like a bucket of water spilling across the timber floor.
“The weirdest thing just happened…” Jorge said, in a confused tone. “There was just a straight downpour!”
“Rain?” A woman shrieked. “There’s not a cloud in that sky!” she argued.
“No, honest! There really was!” Jorge protested. “I wouldn’t even call it rain; it was like a giant bucket ‘o water was just dumped down on me.”
“Nonsense! You were probably just drunk, as usual…” Bill grumbled.
“Go out to my farmhouse, Bill, it’s as wet as the sand by the sea!”
“Quit your yappin’ and just come get yur usual ale, ya great drunk!” Bill hollered. After that, everyone in the saloon continued jabbering their usual jibber, so Teffy couldn’t pick out any more of the conversation.
