A Quiet Afternoon by the River? At the dull day of the river crossing Where the energy is low and the water flat Broken reflection of some building works Darkening the reflected grey light sky Looking for peace I settle to write First one group huddles to a stop Talk and walk on by then back As I have done myself When someone dares to paint outside… A smoker’s hacking cough breaks through the silence Which effect disturbs the geese To fly off in all directions to squawk and honk As a small air filled lifeboat judders into life Moving affront its tiny V-shaped wake Conflicting (but to no avail) across The heavy wash a passing tourist boat creates At the bridge the trundling train’s underground musical rhythms Ensures inclusion in this scenario Disturbing the gulls into a panic of random oscillation About some unknown source Signalling an urban perturbation in their midst Another train comes in across the river into Town Across the bridge as the jogger softly pads his path along the way…
Formats Book Details About the book About The Author Lewis Hill was educated at St Benedict’s, Ealing in West London where he received a well rounded education and developed a sense of humour. He went up to Having studied the likes of Lucretius (for its poetry) and Russell, Hume, Paine and Locke (for their enlightenment) he developed an interest in the impact the environment ( both internal and external) plays in human behaviour. In the mid 80s he had several short stories broadcast on a London-wide talk-based radio.More recently in the 90s he has contributed to five anthologies of poetry (receiving a commendation for one contribution). His writing has also featured in magasines and in-house journals.This is his first book of collected works. He has worked as a counsellor for Victim Support for twelve years, helping clients recover from the aftermath of crimes. A tireless fundraiser for Cancer Research he has completed numerous cycle marathons around He is married to Fiona by whom he has two children, Adam and Rebecca, and still lives in Ealing, London.
