The teenage years are a very complicated time. Teens typically seek independence, but may fear too much freedom. They resent parental control and supervision, but they also need support and attention. As we all can see, the teen years are surrounded with a multitude of emotions; confusion being the most apparent. With today’s ever growing stresses, such as school, friends, and family, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to reach your teenage son or daughter. If you thought, “getting through” with your adolescent daughter or son was an easy task you would not be reading this report.
The teen years are a most confusing time - not only for the teenagers, but also for family, teachers, counselors and professional therapists. There is a full array of conflicting theories and approaches to finding effective ways of reaching a teenage child. It was the goal of writing this report to help establish competent ways of communicating with adolescents during those emotional teen years. The prime view promoted in this report is completely humanistic with its stress on learning (and then utilizing) positive and effective communication styles. However, before we can even begin to enter a teen’s world, we must recognize our own imperfections. You must be willing to learn from your teenager, for there are countless things that these adolescents can teach each one of us. It is through a parent’s flaws and coming to terms with the knowledge that parents are not perfect that help teenagers establish their own identity. Even though we were once teenagers, we must realize that they are growing up under completely different circumstances. The world has become a much bigger arena, and with that growth comes a greater number of stresses to confront. As a parent, teacher, or counselor, we must accept that teens live in a much different time period. For a teen, the most important thing we can do is to recognize that support, patience, understanding and knowledge are the main ingredients in helping teenagers develop into healthy and productive adults. Without a basic understanding of teen development, we are doomed to fail in reaching our teenage sons and daughters. Furthermore, the teens themselves must be directly engaged in deciding their developmental paths. As parents, teachers and counselors, our main goal should be reaching these teens, not pushing them further away. The title - “Reach Your Teen” - has been chosen to reflect this goal. We must recognize that the teenage years will not last forever. It is necessary to expect challenges during these emotional years, but focus on the positive outcomes of growth and change for your teenage son or daughter. When asked about problems with their parents, teens most often express that their parents just do not listen to them. This report has been put together with both teenagers and parents in mind, with an emphasis on developing and promoting healthy communication styles.

About the Author
I must make it a point to let you know that I have waited a long time to write this report. Helping parents reach teenagers has been a significant part of my own development, both personally and career wise. I have had crucial academic and career training with juveniles over the past ten years. This training has led me to positions such as Juvenile Court Counselor and Conflict Mediator. I also serve as an Academic Advisor with the Linda Christas College Fund. My primary goal as a Juvenile Court Counselor and Conflict Mediator is to reunite teenagers with their families following a crisis involving law enforcement agencies. My purpose is to assist parents in reaching their teenage sons or daughters and creating mutual respect with the use of accountability and compassion. The following report will include tips and techniques I have learned throughout my academic and career experiences to help parents reach their teens.
