Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man's desire to understand. - Neil Armstrong For a considerable time prior to the sun rising above the horizon in the morning and after the sun sets the sun illuminates the sky so faintly that it is practically imperceptible to the naked eye. Although seen as almost total darkness by the casual observer, while the sun is still well below the horizon its rays strike the atmosphere and are scattered, both by the air itself and by suspended matter, e.g., dust and smoke. This diffused light from the sky during the early evening or early morning when the sun is below the horizon is refracted by the atmosphere and can be captured by a camera using a long exposure. The long exposure allows the film to accumulate the light which the eye does not see. Also, many films are more sensitive to red light than the human eye, especially the color saturated films favored by professional photographers. Often this will be seen as a crescent of red light appearing just above the horizon.

The book contains over 100 full color fine art photographs taken in and around Boulder, Colorado. The book is a pictorial representation of a year spent on open space properties in Boulder County and is organized into four sections, each section representing a season of the year. Photographs range from ‘grand scenics’ of the sweeping vistas in Boulder, to more intimate landscapes of the features to be found on open space property to close-ups of some of the more delicate plants and animals. Interspersed throughout the pictures is narrative designed to bring the reader a better appreciation of the natural world in general and the wonders to be found on open space properties in the area in general.
