You were the most beautiful baby. You had the tiniest head with lots of thick, fluffy, dark hair. I held you snug in my arms and whispered, “What a beautiful baby girl! Someday you will grow up to be a beautiful woman.” …
Several years flew by and you were not a little girl anymore…
You asked to borrow my favorite lipstick for the Junior High Dance. You had the reddest, fullest lips of any girl on the dance floor. After the dance you side stepped over to me, puckered your lips, and said, I feel like a beautiful woman!” Then you asked, “Mom, am I a woman now?”
“Oh my sweet daughter, not quite yet, but you look so grown up wearing red lipstick!” I responded...
You tearfully looked over to me and said, “Mom, now I understand. It was not learning to write, winning awards, wearing red lipstick or even getting into trouble that make you a woman. And, not when I graduated from high school or got married. It was not even when I gave birth that made me a woman. It is different for every little girl. It wasn’t one single thing. It was many different things.”
“Yes, my lovely daughter, now you understand,” I tearfully responded, “Somewhere between the red lipstick and now, you became a woman.”

About the Book
Mommy, Am I a Woman Now?
A little girl thinks she becomes a woman by being brave, winning awards and wearing red lipstick. She continually asks, “Mommy, am I a woman now?” and the reply she gets throughout life is, “Oh honey, not yet, but you are a big girl!” Finally, the day comes when her mother tearfully replies, “yes” to her repetitious question. It is a touching story about a mother realizing her little girl has grown up and how difficult it is to admit that she has in fact become a woman.
About the Author
Terry Mapson’s stories deal with the realities of life and are written for children, parents, teachers and readers of all ages. Her stories are created by gathering special moments in time and writing them in story form. Her illustrations are created through scrap booking and computerized photographic art images.
Terry has been an educator for over twenty years. She has a Master’s Degree in Education and is author of the children’s book “A Special Box for Daddy”. Terry and her husband, Sam, live in Los Angeles, CA.
