Chapter 1 – Monday, Bedford
First delicious cup of morning coffee in one hand, a slice of Marmite toast in the other, Jonathon Swift heard the rattle of the letterbox as a single item of post dropped onto the doormat of his luxury town house, close to Bedford Railway Station. It was a fine Monday morning in April and a good-feeling day was just about to get even better.
Saucering the cup and wiping the Marmite from the table knife, he collected the mail from the hall and opened the envelope. The letter, accompanied by a crisp cheque for ten thousand pounds, was as concise as it was enigmatic. It read:
Dear Jonathon,
Please put any immediate personal affairs in order and join us in committee at Room 4, Institute of Manufacturing Advancement, 7 Lonsdale Walk, Westminster on Wednesday 14 April at 10.00 am. Be prepared for extensive travel following a period of briefing.
Some of your friends and colleagues know that you have worked on classified projects for HMG from time to time before, so you may state that this is an extension of previous work in order to explain your temporary absence.
On receipt of your bank details, further sums of £10,000 will be deposited in your account for each week or part of a week that you are working with us. We trust you will find this acceptable and welcome aboard.
