   This book differs from others on this subject by recording and
   analysing artistic ability from infancy to adult professional level,
   with copies of original drawings illustrating the sequence of
   successful development over a 24 year period.
 
     " Most children love to draw. The fruits of their efforts are not
      only a source of pleasure to themselves, but also of pride to
      their parents. But children's drawings also provide a window
      through which the developing cognitive and social skills can  
      be observed.  Drawings are therefore a useful area of
      developmental study.
 
      Children's drawings have been discussed in the context of
      developmental abilities. They may also be considered for their
      communicative content and can bring to light underlying emotional
      issues. Moreover, children draw as a modality of play. Artistic
      efforts are then engaged in for the pleasure of their production."  
 
  In the latter part of the book the evolution of change in interest, 
  humour and mature ability becomes apparent.             

About the Author

Eileen Berrangè MBChB was born and educated in South Africa, graduating in Medicine at the University of Cape Town and finally moving to England where she now lives.

She has a life-long interest in childhood development which led to collections of children’s drawings and finally to the subject matter for this book.

Chris Molteno PhD MD FCP(SA) DCH was born in South Africa and received his education at the University of Cape Town.

He is a developmental paediatrician with a particular interest in child development. He was the Vera Grover Professor of Mental Handicap and is currently an emeritus professor at the University of Cape Town.
