the opening of “Vaudeville Blues – A Play in One Scene…”

The Scene:

Richard appears at the right rear of the stage. He stands for a moment, then takes a few steps forward. He then walks to the left side of the stage. He reaches the left side, just as Cheryl comes around the large pillar. She startles him.

Richard:

Damn, you scared me.

Cheryl:

I’m sorry.

Richard:

Cheryl:

Uh, it mostly is, except for myself, and Mr. and Mrs. Talbot. They’re both in the back.

Richard:

Cheryl:

Richard:

Oh, I see. He pauses. My friend Marc works here. Do you know him?

Cheryl:

Yes.

Richard:

He pauses. Any idea if he’s been here today, or if he’s going to be here?

Cheryl:

o, I’m sorry. She pauses. I just got here a few minutes ago. Mr. and Mrs. Talbot have been here a little while, they may know.

Richard:

Okay, I’ll check with them. He pauses, then looks at her. My name’s Richard, by the way.

Cheryl:

I’m Cheryl. She hesitates. It’s nice meeting you. She’s quiet, and watches him.

Richard:

I hope I’m not making you nervous. Marc is an old friend of mine. He pauses. I’ve spent a lot of time at the theater here. I just haven’t been down here recently.

She watches him.

The Talbots’ oldest son is named Benjamin. The youngest is Frederick. They have another son named Tim, and a daughter, Ellie. I’ve been to their house for dinner.

Cheryl:

She nods. Should I go get one of them?

Richard:

He pauses. Yeah, if you don’t mind.

She leaves the stage. He takes a deep breath, and folds his arms. He waits, and in a little bit Mrs. Talbot comes around the pillar, followed by Cheryl.
