STEP 2 – Life Is Like a Box of Chocolates When I first heard the expression, “Life is like a box of chocolates,” I immediately could relate. Some days, we wake up in the morning and feel like we are on top of the world. However, by the end of the day, we feel like the world has turned against us because we have gone through a trial, or a series of trials, in one day. By the end of the day, our head hurts, our stress level has increased, and we seek an outlet. For many, that outlet is food, drinking, smoking, drugs, or sex. All of which are the enemy’s schemes to trick us to sin. The enemy starts to tell us, “You should give up,” “Nothing good happens to you,” “You are all alone,” “No one loves you,” “Everything you touch fails”, or asks us “Why bother?” “What else can go wrong?” “What’s the use?” “If he/she doesn’t care then why do you?” and more. We feel like our issue is unique and no one could possibly relate. We feel isolated and defeated because we do not know what to do when we face trials. Well, I have learned in the process of writing this book that our individual problems are not unique. The enemy will use the same tricks on different people in isolation. He does not invent new tricks; he uses the same tired tricks on everyone, so we feel defeated and alone. However, God has a way out of every trial and for every tribulation. God has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Bible as our source for the truth. Step 2 is designed to walk you through scenarios that are based on real-life events. You will begin to realize that your trials are similar to those of other people and begin to expose the enemy for who he really is: a thief and a liar. Through the scenarios, you will begin to think proactively and to discern the true source of evil: the devil. When you face issues in at school, at home, in your family, or in life, before you react or overreact, you need to seek God for the answer. God wants us to come before Him in prayer and thanksgiving. He wants us to seek His counsel and guide us through our trials. However, there are many people who do not want to seek God in certain situations because they are afraid of the answer. God is our Father and He wants what is best for us. God will not withhold good things from us. The Bible tells us, in Psalm 34:10: The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. The Bible tells us, in James 1:17: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. We need to seek God when we face issues, and turn to His Word, the Bible. There are an infinite number of issues people could face, so depending on the issue, we need to find a scripture that will give us the answer.

We find out that “Life is like a Box of Chocolates” and based upon other contributing factors, we do not know what to expect or more importantly what to do. We feel like our trial is unique and no one could possibly relate. We feel isolated and defeated because we do not know what to do when we face trials.
Box of Chocolates for Teens is designed to walk you through scenarios that are based on real-life events. The book enables teens to realize their problems are not unique. Teens will begin to realize their trials are similar to other teens and they are not alone. The book consists of 180 scenarios that are categorized by SCHOOL – FAMILY – LIFE issues for each day of the school year. The book contains a 5-step application process to reveal the provisions God has made for our every need. The scenarios included in the books can happen to anyone, so teens are encouraged to depend on God and promises He has made to us through the Holy Bible.
Step 2 of the 5-step process can be facilitated in a group or alone. The facilitated session enables participants to think about the “what if” and gives them an opportunity to proactively respond to issues they may face or someone they know may face. During the session, participants have the opportunity to respond to scenarios and share his/her life experiences.
About the Author
Nicole Smith was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. After graduating from high school in 1988, she attended Ohio University in Athens, OH on a basketball scholarship. In 1992, she graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems and Marketing. She started her career at a large consulting company where she learned consultative skills while working in the Information Technology practice. She later attended Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, MO where she earned a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems. Nicole has worked over 13 years as an Information Technology Consultant in Process Improvement, Software Quality Assurance, Project Management, Business Analysis, and Management.
Nicole’s passion for writing began in elementary school when she would write skits and short stories. However, like many young children, the dream of becoming a playwright or author was not realized because of other paths she had taken in life. It was not until January 2005, when Nicole realized there was more to life than she could imagine. God began to show her visions of her purpose in life.
God led Nicole to write a simple, creative, spiritual book that everyone can relate to for spiritual awareness, growth, or encouragement. The writing of her first book (Box of Chocolates) did not come without trials in her personal life. The book was written during a very difficult time in her life. Nicole’s first true love is writing, but she never pursued the dream until God through the Holy Spirit gave her the words to write.
