In the late eighteenth century John Newton, a former slave trader, wrote the ever popular song ''Amazing Grace'' as a record of the transformation that had taken place in his life.
That song includes the words:
''tis grace hath brought me safe thus far and grace
will lead me home.
Despite the previous evil in his life, John Newton had experienced such a transformation that he became convinced that, come what may, at the end of his life he would be taken home and, in effect, reach heaven.
Was such confidence justified or was this an unproven figment in his thinking? When he died in 1807 did this become a reality in his life or was it all pie in the sky when he died?
At some time in our lives we all have to face up to the three great questions in life; ''Where have I come from?’ ''Why am I here?'' and ''Where am I going?'' We can ignore or neglect the first two questions but to do this to the third is stupidity!
Can I know for a certainty in this life that I will be going to heaven or is this at best only a hope that one day I will be there? And if I can be sure of heaven today, is there anything that I can do tomorrow that in the end disqualifies me from that prize?
It is this question that this book seeks to answer. Is my eternal destiny secure and is there anything that I can do in the future that will change this?

Heaven - Can I be sure? - Can it be lost? is written with two purposes in mind.
Firstly, it is to enable a person who is sincerely troubled concerning the next life how to be certain about the future and, secondly, to demonstrate that, once that certainty is obtained, it cannot be lost.
There are many verses in the Bible that seem to indicate that subsequent actions might rob a person of their place in heaven but this book proves that this is not the case. Each verse is examined to see what is actually being taught and consequently, this book makes an ideal reference book for anyone who might find some of these verses troubling. Every keen Christian shouldhave this book on his bookshelf.
About the Author
Peter Smails, a retired Chartered Accountant by profession, has had a lay Bible teaching ministry for more than 50 years and has been a member of Gideons International for 30 of these years. He was a Sunday School Superintendent for 16 years.
With his wife, Pauline, he has served on the mission field, has pastored churches, led adult and youth groups and has served as an advisor in a number of evangelistic crusades. Currently he and his wife are helping pioneer a small growing church in a village near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
