Beth and Joey were very good friends. They lived in
There were twelve houses altogether. Beth lived at number four and Joey lived at number nine. They were the only children in that street.
Beth was aged twelve and Joey was ten. They both attended the village school about a mile away from their home. Beth was a rather serious girl, Joey, very mischievous.
One day they were walking home from school. When they arrived at the beginning of the street they usually paused and chatted.
In the garden of number one there was a scarecrow. Beth and Joey called the garden scarecrow garden and they had named the scarecrow Mr. Jolly because he had a happy face.
Mr. Jolly had been in the garden of number one ever since they could remember and always appeared to be looking intently at the mountain.
The children were chatting happily away, then, suddenly, Joey noticed that Mr. Jolly’s arm had moved forward and his hand appeared to be pointing towards the mountain.
Joey stopped talking and just stared at Mr. Jolly.
‘Look Beth! Mr. Jolly’s arm moved’.
‘Oh don’t be silly Joey!’ said Beth.
‘It did, it did’ cried Joey. ‘His arm moved forward. Look’.
Beth looked at Mr. Jolly. ‘He does look different’ she said. ‘Yes indeed he does, he seems to be pointing at the mountain’.
They both looked over at the mountain. In the center of the mountain there was a huge crater-like gap overgrown with grass, heather and ferns. It had always been there since they could remember but today it looked different some how.
‘Oh come on’, said Beth. ‘The wind probably blew Jolly’s arm forward, its nothing’. ‘No, look’, said Joey ‘There is a light flashing in the center of the mountain’.
They both looked again at Mr. Jolly. His arm stayed outstretched pointing at the mountain.
‘Maybe Jolly is giving us a sign,’ said Beth. ‘We should go over to the light and explore. I will call for you after tea’.
‘Okay’ said Joey; he was very excited.
After tea Beth and Joey told their mothers they were going to play on the mountain which was quite usual. They took George, Joey’s
When the children reached the crater they called George and fastened the lead to his collar. ‘Do you think we only imagined we saw a light Beth?’ asked Joey.
‘Of course not’ said Beth. ‘We couldn’t both imagine it at the same time. Be very quiet; something might happen,’ and it did.

About the Book
The story tells of two friends, Beth and Joey, who are befriended by people from another planet. They are taken inside a mountain where the aliens have made a temporary home. They have exciting adventures and make many friends.
About the Author
Margaret Freili lives with her husband in Cwmbach in Aberdare. Margaret is a retired nurse and enjoys reading, walking, swimming, singing and needlework. She has written numerous other children’s stories, which she has read to a local primary school with positive reports and illustrations.
