Donny Bader lay on his bed, shivering under a heavy sheet and blanket, gazing at his wife Mavis, lying beside him, and the curtains blowing in the cool October breeze that wafted through the open windows of the bedroom.
“It must be below freezing,” Donny said softly, inching closer to Mavis, trying to gain some warmth from her body. This was made difficult due to the fact that Mavis was sleeping on top of the blanket, which acted as an insulating barrier and kept most of her body heat from reaching Donny.
“Mavis,” Donny whispered loudly, or at least as loud as a whisper could be, “wake up damnit!” Mavis, who had been snoring, quieted briefly, then snorted and resumed sleeping.
Donny glared at his sleeping wife, while she lay naked beside him, her lips fluttering slightly each time she exhaled. Normally, Donny found the sight of the woman sleeping beside him to be satisfying and stimulating at the same time, but now he was cold and miserable and he needed to talk to her anyway.
“Wake up,” Donny said aloud, at the same time pinching Mavis’s nostrils together while holding the palm of his hand over her mouth. Mavis was quiet and still for about five seconds, then she lunged upright out of her sleep with a muffled grunt. Donny quickly pulled both of his arms under the blanket before Mavis could fully awaken.
“What’s the matter honey? Can’t you sleep?” Donny asked innocently. Mavis was fully awake now and turned her gaze toward him.

About the Book
In The Innocents, Donny and Mavis Bader receive a visit from Jim Porter, a lawman who has evidence implicating Donny in the murder of two men involved in his previous wife’s death. In return for Donny’s help in solving a case involving the abduction and rape of his niece, Porter tells Donny the evidence against him will disappear. As the investigation progresses, the scope and magnitude of the crimes targeted, escalate. Donny and Mavis Bader find themselves entangled in a case involving kidnappers, child pornographers, and murderers.
This is a unique story, but unfortunately, the subject matter is not. Young people are taken and abused everyday in this country, and often the perpetrators of the abuse go unpunished.
