Dear self, it’s been a while since I’ve sought your helping hand.
Being on my own it’s been kinda hard for me take a stand.
I gotta lot of stuff going on and things are getting kinda crazy.
I’m high and drunk all the time; everything stays blurry and hazy.
Self you know I love you; shit I’m your number one fan.
I just wonder where you’ve been; I’m trying to make it but I don’t think that I can.
It’s sorta hard for me to explain things; I guess you could say I’m lost.
Believe me I’m paying the price for confusion I couldn’t even tell you the cost.
I just figured I’d explain it to you, I figured I had to let you know.
I don’t go to the movies anymore cuz my life is one hell of a show.
It can’t go like this anymore self so I’ve decided to reach out.
Don’t get mad at the things you’ve heard self please don’t scream and shout.
I’m only trying to make it and you of all people should understand.
God gave me the cards and I’ve played every last hand.
Come on now self your silence is making me want to cry.
You have to admit I’ve come a long way I no longer want to die.
I’m writing you this letter to say come out and please don’t hide.
I’m giving up everything to say I need you self; I’m giving up my pride.
I’m just telling you it’s saddening when I look in the mirror at what I see.
There no longer is a you… there’s just a wasted shadow of me.

Sometimes I think happy the feeling just doesn’t last.

Sometimes I stare in the mirror and watch my tears glisten…..
These are words coming straight from the pages of a teenage girl’s diary. She has no name because this story, told in her own words, represents the face of what a lot of teenagers are experiencing today. She speaks for a generation of young adults no matter what the gender, race, or age. This is her diary, opened to tell the story of so many whose voices go unheard. Follow her through her dramatic times and witness her strength as she struggles to survive the pressures of being a teenager in this age of crime, violence, poverty, and death. Hopefully, as you read her story and embark on her emotional rollercoaster full of pain and confusion, as well as joy and triumph, you won’t see the face of your own teen within these pages. If you do, let this story give you the confidence and the insight to reach out and save them.
About the Author
I started writing in my early years and knew that it was what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing around age 13. After entering high school I was influenced by several of my English teachers to submit my work into various different writing and poetry contests. My first year of high school I entered into two different contests, finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. By the time I was a senior, I had secured two first place finishes. I started Diary of a Teenage Mind toward the end of my senior year, and it took me five years to get it completed to my satisfaction. This is my first published work and I have several other projects under way. I am new on the scene, but I hope to be heard for many years to come.
