“Sir, I don’t know whether he’s cheating by counting cards or some other means, but no one has that kind of natural luck at twenty one. And you should see what he does with a slot machine.”
“That’s what you’re supposed to be doing there, seeing what I can’t see for myself. Just what does he do with a slot machine?”
“For one thing, he can hardly lose. The other is that when he lays his hands on them, the lights dim way down and the display stops just where he wants it. It’s like he was sucking the power out of them.”
“Has anyone else besides you and your partner seen this happen?”
“Well, let’s put it this way....he and his wife have been escorted out of the last two casinos’ they’ve been in. One before last they took for close to fifty thousand. The word’s been spread on them.”
“Where are they now?” Jack asked.
“They finally had dinner and went to their room.”
“Any signs of them leaving?”
“According to the desk clerk they’ll check out tomorrow, so I suspect that they’re about to go home. But then again, with the money that they’ve won, they might stay longer.”
“Well..,” Jack started to say something, then hesitated slightly before continuing, “Stay in touch with them and don’t do anything until they get back home. We might decide after all to bring him in.”
“Oh, one other thing I almost forgot, sir. You remember the report that that Calvin guy gave, about the static spark and the
“Yes, I remember. What about it?”
“Well, it happened again here. Twice. The last time I saw it myself. Some casino thug that was guiding him out of his place got zapped pretty good. I’d swear that Ingle caused the spark to jump at him. Another time a car parking valet guy said he got nailed by a blue spark when he reached for a tip. Scared the shit out of him.”
Jack didn’t say anything for awhile, thinking about what he’d just heard. It couldn’t be a coincidence that so much static could build up. There was a lot of carpeting in and around the gambling establishments, but Seven Eleven didn’t have any.
“Stay with them and call if anything changes,” Jack said, “And keep in mind about his hands for when we bring him in.”
“You can bet I’ll stay away from them, they could be dangerous!”
