About the Author

David Cortez is a former United States Marine who served one year with the Third Reconnaissance Battalion in Okinawa, Japan. Cortez is a graduate of Dallas Baptist University and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is a twenty-four-year veteran of the Ft. Worth Police Department, where he currently serves as a sergeant in the Patrol Division. Among his many assignments in police work are the Patrol Division, Vice, Intelligence, Narcotics, Burglary Detective, Gang Unit, Federal Drug Task Force (known as Weed-n-Seed), and the Training Division. He currently trains police recruits in defensive tactics at the Tarrant County College Police Academy. He has trained several thousand police officers over the years in all issues involving “use of force,” to include arrest control tactics, pepper spray, police baton and other impact weapons, gun retention, ground fighting, open-hand control, and tactical communication. Cortez has attended defensive tactics instructor schools sponsored by the FBI, Ft. Worth Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Defensive Tactics Instructors Conference. He has also attended one arrest control tactics instructors’ course taught by Bob Koga. During Cortez’s twenty-four-year police career, he has received twenty-two police commendations and one award for valor. Sergeant Cortez was also awarded the Nick Fowler Top Instructor Award at the Tarrant County College Basic Police Officer’s Academy.

 

Cortez is a fifth-degree black belt in American karate, a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do, a third-degree black belt in hapkido American karate, and a green belt in kodokan judo. Cortez has a background in boxing. Over the past twenty-five plus years, he has also taught several thousand students in karate.

 

In addition, he has taught many women’s self-defense seminars at area hospitals. Cortez has taught three US Army units in the offensive and defensive use of a knife to be administered in sentry silencing, self-defense, and other issues involving lethal force.

 

Since September 11, 2001, Cortez has become certified by the World Black Belt Association in cabin and cockpit defense and has devoted his free time to teaching American Airline employees in cabin and cockpit defense.

 

In August 2004, the Transportation Security Administration invited Cortez to be one of sixteen nationwide lead instructors of cabin and cockpit defense.
