“It took a few days for J.Z. to recover from the disappointment of G-Ma's non-healing. But Mercy had moved in. Mercy had gone deep. Mercy was bubbling up, filling him, looking for a place to flow.
“It was that growing need to flow that eventually moved J.Z. to leave the sanctuary of his home. ...one late summer afternoon...he headed for the front door.
"‘Dear, are you going out?’ G-Ma asked in astonishment.
"‘Yes, I believe I am...I'm going to find someone who needs mercy. I shall return after I have given away mercy.’ ...he closed the door and headed toward the street. So how does one go about dispensing mercy? J.Z. eyed the eight-unit apartment building across the street.... He might as well begin there....
“...There were two apartments on either side. A brown mutt with a rolled newspaper in his mouth scurried away at his approach.
“...Shouldering aside his fears, he knocked on the first apartment door on the left. A man wearing a sleeveless undershirt opened the door. A large dagger was tattooed on his right forearm. He held an open can of beer. Curiously, the brown mutt stood at his side..."‘Whadayawant?’
"‘Excuse me, my name is J.Z.....I was wondering if you....’
"‘You ain't the kid that's been stealing my newspapers are you?’ dark anger began to form on his face.
“‘No, sir.... The brown dog laid his ears back and drooped his head. ‘Could you use some mercy?’ ...
"‘What kind of a...’ the slamming door truncated the man’s unfinished question....
“Obviously he doesn't need mercy.
