All my life, I was an agnostic. Agnostics want to believe in God, but have doubts.
I went to Bible study, prayed, and kept my opinions to myself.
I had a prayer which I prayed inside my head every day.
"Thank you, God, for guiding my life. I can see you working in my life to make good things happen to me. For example, when I became mentally ill at age 32, my husband''s insurance covered everything. Health insurance, in those days, just did not cover mental illness.
I am now a firm believer in God. Two events changed my beliefs. I will copy them from my diary. I had no idea why God would get in touch with me. But now, ten months later, after suffering unbearable pain, I think I do.
My diary entry was on July2, 2002,
I leaned forward, studying the panel. I was concentrating, my mind clear of all distractions.
To my left, I heard the most beautiful voice say "! can hear you."
I was stunned. I thought it was an angel, but did not answer. I turned off the computer and prayed,
The next day I e-mailed the kids. Mark assured me there was not a voice on his website
I am going to tell you something that happened on
There was a slight tearing sound and a voice I recognized as the angel that had said "I can hear you" weeks ago said one word" SUE"'', there was no expression just the word. So I got up and wrote furiously on my book for an hour. Too bad I have had mental illness so I do not feel like people would believe me. But I think God wants me to write LUCK or training
"Layoff empathy" in the May 23 Reader Views struck a memory chord. In 1969, my husband was working as an engineer at Royal Typewriter in Springfield, Mo. A violent strike caused the plant to move to England:.
What luck! My husband was 44, still young enough to obtain a Coleman engineering job.

About the Book
Part One
During the 1998 Clinton Scandal, Sue Garoutte started writing pro-Clinton comments to the Wichita Eagle. She continued to write comments to the paper on other subjects. When the editor of the Op-Ed page started the Opinion Maker Program, Sue started writing on whatever subject she was assigned. This made her a mini celebrity in Wichita. People would say, "Oh, you are Sue Garoutte. You are probably right" (about the subject of that day).
The editor describes her writings as both poignant and pithy. Her subjects range from politics to the war, to everyday struggles, stimulating public debate.

Part Two
With Jim''s Help (My Most Unforgettable Character)
After Sue''s husband, Tony, had a stroke, she hired a man, Jim Lakey to help care for him. She needed Jim, since she had schizophrenic catatonic episodes. Later, she was cured of this condition when her new doctor used a new, never before tried treatment. It relieved all her symptoms almost instantly.
Her husband''s career had spanned three cities, as he rose-grade B inspector to Engineering Manager!
A story of the little guy making it in America. To quote Tony: "I have had the most fantastic life anyone has ever had!"
About the Author
Sue Garoutte is a retired RN who has always enjoyed writing. She has many comments published in the Wichita Eagle included in this book and added a heart rending section (My Most Unforgettable Character) to the book. ("What Does Sue Think About That?"; Sue wrote another book, "''Til Death Do Us Part," which she printed for her family and friends. She has written a humorous article "How to Write Your Life Story," ready for publication She has three grown daughters and four grandchildren. She lives in Happily pursues her hobby – Writing.
