At The Indiana Heart Hospital, we deal every day with patients who have heart disease or the threat of a cardiac problem. These people are nervous. Often, they are looking at their mortality head-on. Not surprisingly, they experience increased stress levels and adrenaline just by walking in the door of a healthcare facility. It makes you wonder why so many hospital environments are so cold and austere, square rooms within square buildings, boxes within boxes. Such environments only contribute to the patient’s anxiety level, which can result in the need for additional pain medication, not to mention troubles with insomnia and other side effects!
We at TIHH wanted to create a different experience for our patients. Our goal in designing the hospital was to immediately reduce that stress level by providing an environment that is bright and cheery, based on the theory that the healing process can be helped by comfortable and uplifting surroundings. Specifically, the facility had to be warm and inviting. It had to be fully functional, and it had to be the best use of space that we could imagine. And no boxes within boxes for us; we at The Indiana Heart Hospital decided to think outside the box. The result? TIHH is a gorgeous facility from an aesthetic standpoint, one that truly stands out architecturally. Partnering with two firms, RTKL and BSA Life Sciences, we built the hospital of the future. Beyond that, it’s a comforting and nurturing space. Most importantly, we’ve created a design with an improved, efficient workflow for staff and doctors.

About the Author
David Veillette is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Indiana Heart Hospital, the nation’s first fully digital healthcare facility. He was previously CEO of the
Veillette received national recognition as the winner of the 2004 Louis Sullivan Award from the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange, which recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through their leadership, vision, and achievements in advancing the overall quality and efficiency of healthcare.
Veillette earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry, his master’s degree in business, and his Ph.D. in management studies. He has more than 35 years experience in the cardiovascular field in both clinical and administrative leadership roles in many locations throughout the country. Veillette has earned national registry status in cardiovascular, perfusion, radiology, and pulmonary technologies. Starting his career as a scrub technician in a CATH lab in the late 1960s gave him the clinical experience to work closely with and understand the needs of physicians. He has had the privilege of working in both not-for-profit and for-profit healthcare environments. This experience managing multiple departments, in multiple environments, in many locations across the country has provided him with unique insight into many of the issues facing healthcare today. Veillette has consulted many organizations in developing and improving cardiovascular services. He is a constant lecturer, nationally and internationally, on the future model of healthcare and how to improve hospital efficiencies.
