About the Book

This book has lots of characters, lots of emotion, and lots of adventure, but no plot. Over the years the author has profiled more than 150 ordinary people of San Marcos and Hays County, Texas. These profiles were published in the San Marcos Daily Record. Some of these tales have historical value; some are inspirational; and some are poignant. But one thing is certain. They all have a lot of heart.

The author goes beyond the telling of the tale. He gets into the heart of the individuals whose lives he shares. He allows them and their neighbors to plumb the depths of those “ordinary” people he found behind the sales counter; aboard the fire engine; or shepherding 25 kindergartners across the street.

About the Author

Bibb Underwood’s life is about people. A 27-year veteran of the U.S. Army, he commanded Infantry units from platoons to battalions from Korea to Viet Nam. Understanding the background, behavior, motivation, and ambitions of individuals was essential to success. It was in this life that he came to deeply appreciate each individual’s uniqueness. All have a story and every story is worth telling.

A twenty-year post retirement career as a family therapist intensified and expanded this appreciation. He recognizes that the self-effacing math professor is a hero. Under the façade of the UPS driver’s ubiquitous brown uniform there is an unquenchable spark of creativity. And the retired dentist with the slight limp is a valiant survivor.
