This book was written for parents of children in Kindergarten through 8th grade. It was written to provide parents with specific suggestions on how to help their children successfully complete all types of homework assignments.
Children Do Homework, Not Parents
Parents should NOT be doing homework for their children. I want to be very clear on this point – children must take responsibility for doing their own homework. But parents can help their children in very specific ways. And in the process of curing the homework stress, parents can also teach their children important life skills like: time management skills, coping skills, organizing skills, and more.
I became interested in the topic of parental help with homework when I had challenges with my own child. At that time, I was a teacher myself. I assigned homework to my students and held them accountable if they did not do it; but I did not know how to help my youngest child when he had problems doing and turning in homework. My son and I were in constant “battle” over the homework issue.
After “surviving” my own parental frustrations, I became interested in the research and programs available on the topic of homework. I found suggestions for teachers and became involved in that aspect of the homework issue to the point of starting my own consultant business and doing in-service trainings for teachers and administrators.
My doctoral dissertation was written on parental involvement in school systems and I learned that homework is here to stay (See CHAPTER ONE for specific reasons). Several years ago, I became a grandparent and became interested in helping today’s parents handle homework issues. So, after over thirty years in the educational field, my focus is back on how PARENTS can have a positive influence on their children’s development and help with homework. This book culminates years of experience and learning and was written to give parents practical ideas and suggestions on how to encourage children to do their own homework and turn it in on time.
