“There isn’t any bill yet. My wife is expecting in a couple of months, and I just asked the hospital if I could pay so much a month in case I don’t have enough when the time comes. They have a lotta nerve in my opinion.”
“They’re funny about their money up there. Give me an idea on how much you’ll need.”
“THAT’S what funny! How would I know what the bill will be when the baby isn’t even here yet.” “Anyways whad’yu tell’m?”
“I said I’d have to check your credit. How is it?”
“Truth is, ...not too good at the moment. I was taken for quite a sleigh-ride where I lived before, and I’ll be paying for it for a long time. It’s been rough making the payments.”
“You’re from Harrisville and you sell vacuum cleaners, ...right!”
”How’d you know that?”
“Small town banks are funny about their money too,” he grinned as he walked away. “You come see us when the time comes.”
I collected my deposit book, and headed for the door. As I passed his office he motioned me in.
“I just called the hospital and told them not to worry about the bill. Just let me know when the baby is born, ...what’s it going to be anyway?”
“Hungry, ...probably,” I laffed, ...but we’re hoping for a boy.”
“Good,” he said as he extended his hand. Now go out there and sell one today.” Leaving, I replied.
“Can’t miss, ...nice meeting you.” I was thinking as I left,
“Now THAT’S how I like to do business, ...nice person, Mr. Sarr!” but ‘magine that goddam hospital callin’ like that, ...they got a lotta nerve. Did I get another bad taste in my mouth for this town? NAH! Not when you get to meet a man like Bam Sarr.
The nurse told me as I approached Mama’s room, that it was a nice healthy boy. I walked to the bed they occupied, ..my wife and new son. She had tears in her eyes!
“What’s the matter, honey?”
“Just so happy, I guess. Told you it’d be a boy, didn’t I?”
“Yup, ...but I’m not convinced yet. Let me see the handle, I joked, as I lifted the blanket. Yup, ..boy alright, and he’s beautiful. How you feeling?”
“Just happy, ...he’s going to look just like you.”
“Holly hell, woman, ...don’t wish THAT on him. He’ll be much better lookin’ than me cause he has half of you in him.”
“You’re still the best looking man I’ve seen in this town, ...you ready for another one?”
“As soon as you’re up to it, ...and can guarantee another boy.”
“I’ll be home Friday, and you’d better be ready.” She teased.
“You crazy woman, ...now cut that out!” Damned nut was trying to pull me in the bed with her. Don’t you know.
“I gotta get back to the girls. I’ll line ‘em up outside the window tomorrow, so you can wave to them.”
“You better not be looking at any other woman while I’m here.”
“Aw, come on, you know bettern’ ‘nat,” I assured her as I stepped back to the door.
“Wait a minute,” she waved. “What are we naming him?”
“John, ...not Jack. John Russell.” “See You tom
