FOG

The inspiration for this poem came to me when I realized there were so many drivers that use only their parking lights or no lights at all, when driving in daylight fog.

Your headlights are very important. You need to use them in any kind of fog or smoke. If you are running fog lights, keep them adjusted to the fog lines. The lines on the road keep you on the pavement.

The solid white line on the right is called the fog line.  It is used for this purpose, so keep your headlights on low beam, and keep your fog lights on the fog lines. Now, it is also very important that you keep your fog lights on the fog lines because the glare against the fog limits your vision even more making it even harder to see other motorists, even if they are using their lights.

All you may see is a big white void. I think all new cars that are equipped with fog lights should have standards set by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding fog light adjustment. Fog lights are very bright lights and people have been misled about how to use them. Did you know that if you had a good set of fog lights that were adjusted properly you wouldn’t even need a head light?

The reason I say this is because the more light you keep on the road and not shining into the fog the more transparent the mist becomes. (You just have a better view). Water is like a mirror. You hit it with light and it cast a reflection. That’s what happens in fog. Fog is water and it will cast a glare.

The brighter the light shining into the fog the more hazardous it becomes. So use your lights wisely while driving in the fog. Slow down and give yourself reaction time to avoid obstacles that may arrive in your path of travel.

THE FOG

Headlights in a glow,
from the cloud being so low,

the mist in the air, and the fog on the road,
could limit your sight to only seconds or so.

Reduce your speed because you’re in control
of operating your vehicle safely down the road.

Keep your fog lights on the fog lines,
and your headlight beams on low.

Because the glare against the fog,
you see nothing but a glow.

The things that I’m telling you
I feel that I need to say.

Because when driving on our highways,
good sense really  pays.
