Jen traveled to the airport on Friday afternoon with mixed emotions. She was very happy that she was on her way to a reunion with Ian, but she dreaded what his reaction might be when she told him what had happened. She did not even know how she would tell him. She was an emotional mess, but knew the trip and the conversation were things that she had to do…for him and for herself.
As soon as the plane was airborne, she took a sleeping pill, told the staff that she did not want to eat or be awakened until time to land and shortly was asleep. The pill did its work and gave her a much-needed rest. When the steward shook her gently awake, it seemed as though she had just gone to sleep. Physically, she felt better, but mentally she was not as well off. All the conflict and indecision flooded back into her thoughts within minutes of being awake.
The landing was smooth and soon it was time to disembark. She felt like an animal going to slaughter as she walked through the narrow passageway leading off the plane and into the corridors leading to immigration control and baggage. This was going to be one of the most difficult things that she had ever done in her life.-
Jen told him that she was a buyer for a large chain of department stores. Her appearance and demeanor told him that she was more than just another buyer. “Executive” was projected from her personality in a firm, but not severe way. It was just the way she spoke, the way her voice carried a certain authority, he body language was that of a confident person.
Ian explained his job, underplaying his ability, saying that he was really just an airplane salesman and not an especially good one. She reacted well to his good-humored self-depreciation and when he teased her a bit, saying that he did not think that she was an “ordinary” buyer, she finally confessed with a smile and laugh that she was, in fact, Head Buyer of the entire organization.
