Ever since Jesus left, his followers have been looking for his triumphant return, his Second Coming, an event that would bring “a new heaven and a new earth” (Revelation 21:1). This notion continues to be popular among many Christians, in spite of the fact that nothing has happened for nearly two thousand years.
The church’s explanation for the delay has been that “with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day” (2 Peter 3:8). In its original context (Psalm 90:4) that statement is a magnificent description of the eternity of God. But as an excuse for Jesus’ failure to return, it is nothing less than ridiculous.
In the book of Revelation – amidst apocalyptic pictures of a final conflict between the hosts of heaven and hell – the message to Christians, who were suffering persecution and death, rings out loud and clear: Hold on just a little longer, for the forces of evil are about to be defeated and the present age is quickly coming to a close; if you remain faithful to Jesus, you will share in his victory and reign with him forever and ever in the kingdom of God.
At the conclusion of Revelation, we find repeated promises of Jesus’ impending return. Twice the readers are told, “See, I am coming soon” (22:7,12). Then they are given a final and most emphatic pledge, “Surely I am coming soon,” which is followed by the author’s, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (
To suggest that these words were never meant to be taken literally, that “soon” would be thousands of years later, makes a mockery of sacred promises made to real people in real trouble. The Bible was written for humans, not angels. When Revelation says “soon,” it means within a very short period of time. Any other interpretation is wishful thinking.
