A hard summer rain pelted the grimy tavern windows. Inside, Matt watched Vaughn drink the golden ale then wipe his lips with the back of his hand, planting the brown bottle on its heel.
“You off her in your head, and that’s it. When it’s done, you’re free. She can’t hurt you no more. Stop the pain and save your brain!”“McIntyre. You took one too many head shots.”
Vaughn accepted the compliment, reached into his shirt pocket, and tossed a crumpled envelope onto the sticky table.
“Pick it up.”
Matt felt the weight of the envelope.
“Open it.”
Lifting open the unsealed flap, he saw that the paper on top was a hundred dollar bill. He thumbed the contents. There were ten in all.
“Put it in your pocket, man. Take it.”
“You said it was pretend.”
“Pretend, yeah, but it’s got to feel real.”
“Where’d you get a grand?”
“Betting money. Today, I’m betting on you. Next time we sit, you’re going to know it all. Who, what, when, and where. And we’re going to meet, just like this, and you’re going to ask me, ‘Vaughn, can you do me a favor?’ And I’m going to say, ‘No problem, good buddy, but it’s going to cost you some serious bread.’ And we’re going to lay it out, like I say, all newspaper style: who, what, where, how, when, what if, how about, how much. You’re going to have it visualized. You’re gonna give me the money. You’re gonna make it real.”
“And you’re giving me a thousand dollars?”
“Short term. Unless you got it on your own.”
He could take the money and buy her something. A necklace. A trip. They could go north, maybe Vegas. No, Tahoe. South shore. He had a paycheck coming in a couple of weeks. He’d pay Vaughn back.
Or, he could go with the plan, and figure out a way to kill her in his head.
For good.
