“Richie what the hell is wrong with you, don’t you know how old she is?’
“Come on Joey, I’m only joking around.”
“I swear Richie, your going to get into some serious trouble one of these days.”
“Stop being my father and relax, we only have three more weeks to live it up.”
“You keep playing with those young girls and you’ll get your self into trouble, mark my words.”
“You just don’t know how to live my man. Here we are going off to serve our country, I figure it’s the least these young ladies can do for us before we go to war.”
He was some bull shitter. He had the girls believing we were going right to war in three weeks, when we didn’t even start boot camp yet.
“Come on Joey, were just gone take them for a little ride.”
“No thanks, you go. I’ll catch you later I’m going over to see Diane.
“You see that’s the trouble with you, your stuck on one bitch. You should be like me, love them all “. He said grabbing two of the three girls he had in the front seat of his mother’s car.
“This man is what you call living “Kissing each one of them as he pulled away.
Some times I wonder why I hang around with him. He’s girl crazy, morning, noon and night. That is all he thinks about. As for me, well I am satisfied with Diane. She is all I need in life. I guess that’s the reason I why I have to tell that we should break up. I know it sounds crazy, but just thinking about me being gone for four years. I didn’t want her to have to wait for me the way my mother did for my father. If we both love each other the way we said we do, four years isn’t that long of a wait. I couldn’t see her sitting home waiting for me to come home when who knows, I may never come home. The way the war was going, I could get killed. Our town has lost four already. These weren’t just nobody’s either, these were guy’s I knew and hung around with and now they’re dead. Why, you ask am I going? To tell you the truth, I really don’t know why. I guess because my father was in the Marines, and he fought in the Korean War. I don’t remember him, but my mother told me, he was proud to die for his country. I guess that has stuck with me through the years and it’s my country too.
After my mother died, I had no one left. That was when Richie and I decided to join up. I was living with his folks whom my mother was a good friend with. I mean it’s like we were family already, so that’s why they took me in. Some say my mother never got over my father’s death. They said she died with a broken heart. My mother never did get re-married. All she would talk about was my father and what a good man he was. That’s the reason why I don’t want Diane to wait for me. I have no problem waiting for her, it’s just that it would be better if we broke up and just stayed friends for now. She said she would write everyday, but that wasn’t the problem. I remember my mother saying she should have waited till he returned... but he never did. Some times my mother never made any sense, but sense or not I know this is the right thing to do between Diane and I. I would hate to have history repeat it’s self.
Now to tell her, I started walking back to her house. I didn’t care what Richie’s plans were. Richie is the ladies man with his own agenda. I have mine as well and it starts with Diane.
“There you are, I’ve been waiting for you.”
God was she pretty. Why would I want anyone else, when I had her?
“My Mom said we could stay out tonight.”
I told her I wanted to be with her as much as I could before I left.
