Tales of The Sugar Hollow Twins

The next morning was Christmas Eve.  Markee had gone to sleep, the night before, telling herself to be sure and be the first one in the house to wake up.  She wanted to be the first to call “Christmas Eve Gift” to everybody.  When her eyes popped open, she said, “Oh, no.  It is already getting daylight.”

Markee jumped out of bed and, without finding her slippers, she ran down the hall to Chad’s room.

“Christmas Eve Gift,” she shouted.  “You owe me an extra Christmas present, Chad.  I called it first.”

“Markee,” Chad moaned.  “I’m asleep.  Go away. That is only a silly girl game, anyway.”

“It is not just a silly girl game,” Markee said.  “Mama calls it every Christmas.  I decided I was going to be the first this year.  So – you owe me an extra Christmas present.”

“No.  I do not have another present, Markee.  Go away and let me sleep.  I’m tired.”

“I guess you should be tired, Chad.  You ran all over Grams farm, chasing that crazy model plane last night.  You owe me an extra gift, anyway.”

“No,” Chad said, and he pulled the pillow down tight over his head and said, “No I do not, Markee.  Go away and let me sleep.”

“Oh, phooey,” Markee said.  “You owe me an extra present, anyway.”  She raced to the door and said, “I’m going to get Christmas Eve Gift on Jon Jon.  I’m going to get lots of presents today.”
