Conjunctions
Definition:
A conjunction is a word that joins or connects words, phrases, or
clauses, sometimes sentences. There are
different kinds of conjunctions:
a) Coordinate or coordinating conjunctions.
b) Correlative conjunctions.
c) Subordinate or subordinating conjunctions.
A. Coordinate or coordinating conjunctions
A coordinate or coordinating conjunction is a word
that connects two words or clauses of the same nature, or same grammatical
rank. The coordinating conjunctions
are: “and,” “or,” “but,” “for,” “nor,” “so,” “yet,” “whereas.”
Examples:
I like coffee and tea.
He loves red and blue.
John did it fast and well.
Do you like white wine or red wine?
Put it on my desk or on Norma’s desk.
Love it or leave it.
My mother cooks but* my father cleans.
She is very poor but she is smart.
I eat it but I don’t like it.
She goes there, for** she needs to be there.
I listen to her for she brings news to me.
He lifts that heavy table for he is strong.
I don’t care he comes today nor would anyone miss
him.
My girlfriend doesn’t like it and nor do I.
That is not the real reason, nor is it very
important.
My friend was late so the teacher forgave him.
I like him so I help him.
She doesn’t show up so, I don’t care.
She is very ugly yet very smart.
Mary is very sharp yet very lazy.
He was begging yet nobody helped.
He makes $2,000 whereas*** he receives $1,000.
John drives to school whereas he is always late.
My friend looks very sick whereas she is very
healthy.
