Leaning in, his face not an inch from hers, Gavin rasped in short breaths. “You may not wish to divulge your precious secret tonight, Deavon O’Kealle, but I will find out. As far as calling at Summersville, I shall continue to do so, and you, as the lady you profess to be, shall continue to see me. As my future fiancée it is your duty.”
“Fiancée?” Deavon replied with raised eyebrows. “I will never marry you, Gavin. Never,” she said, her words dripping with malice.
“Oh, I’m sure you’ll change your mind. Your mother is a powerful persuasive, and I’m positive it won’t take her long to sway your father in the right direction. Soon Deavon, everything you have in the world and hold dear will belong to me, including your secrets.”
Deavon felt a lump rise in her throat. She felt betrayed. How could her mother arrange a marriage to this man? She obviously did not know the true Gavin, the Gavin that stood before Deavon now, fiercely holding her hostage. Deavon felt the hot liquid of tears well up in her eyes, and, before she could stop it, one tiny droplet slid over the edge and down her cheek.
Gavin smeared the tear away with his thumb. “Tears of joy?” he asked sarcastically. “I suggest we keep this little conversation between ourselves. I mean, how would it look? A young lady like yourself, looking for a woman who’s been dead for a hundred years. Pathetic really. But, that shouldn’t be too difficult for you. After all, you’re good at keeping secrets.” With that, Gavin leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against Deavon’s. She struggled and finally managed to turn her head to the side, breaking his affections.
Gavin released her from his violent hold, stepped back, and opened the door. “Cheer up, my dear. Didn’t you once say that it was hard for anyone not to have a good time in this kind of atmosphere?” And with a smirk, Gavin stepped out the door to rejoin the festival, leaving Deavon alone.
Trembling, she wiped the remaining wetness from her cheek and the lingering tingle of Gavin’s kiss from her lips. She was frightened. Terrified, just as slaves must have been as they were sold to the highest bidder. Deavon felt as if she had been sold into slavery. The highest bid had been good looks, charm, and wealth. Her new master, Gavin McTarnin, a man whose temper had unmasked its ugly face to her just moments before. But the worst part, the part that pained Deavon the most, was that the one that had sold her into this new life was her own mother.

About the Author
Twenty-one year old Brooke A. Burdett lives with her parents in rural Northern New York. Although she has an Associates Degree, and works, in the field of Accounting, she has always enjoyed writing stories and exploring her imagination.
Her favorite past-times include reading, playing piano, spending time with friends and family, and practicing her flute, a talent she’s nurtured for over ten years.
Although Remember the Legend is her first published work, Brooke has plans for many more books and hopes to one day make writing her career.
