It was while assisting her mentor, Bernarr Macfadden, as his protégée in her late teens, that Jean Farrar first became acquainted with Yoga through contact with the many swamis and teachers (such as Paramhansa Yogananda), who were
Macfadden’s frequent guests at his several health spas. The opportunity to work with dozens of celebrities as diverse as Jimmy Durante and Albert Einstein stood
Jean in good stead after Macfadden’s death, for a number of them continued as her
students and friends when she opened her own ashram at the old Desert Inn in
being chosen as Miss Palm Springs and the Western Week and Desert Circus Queen further enlarged her acquaintance with many other personages as dissimilar as Groucho Marx, Elvis Presley and Howard Hughes.
On a less glamorous scale, but one of solid achievement, she has also taught
Yoga for the City of Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley Recreation Department, the Palm Springs High School, the College of the Desert, the Braille Institute, the Handicapped and Mentally Retarded Foundation of the Desert, and for the Los Angeles Angels baseball team during their spring training in Palm Springs.
She has appeared on many television talks
shows and had her own radio program for three years. She has been a lecturer
and private instructor
for the Betty Ford Alcoholics Awareness Program and the Drug
Abuse Program at
Yogini
Jean’s lifelong interest in and experience with pets, and how she adapted Yoga
for their use, is described throughout this book. She is presently at work on
her next offering, which will relate a number of humorous vignettes about some
of the international celebrities who have been her students and friends. She is also preparing a video
cassette showing her Aqua-Yoga method for weight control, which she introduced
on the Pritikin Program in
