LOVE NEVER DIES
My Mother was born in Slovakia and spoke Slovak and Czech fluently. My Father came from Prague. This is important to the following story.
My Mother and I were very, very close. She was a best friend to me, and her death was a big shock to my Father, my older brother, and myself. She passed away suddenly from complications after heart surgery only one week before Christmas.
It was on a Friday that I received word that my Mother had died. Going to the hospital with my Dad, my brother, and my fiancee, it wasn’t easy seeing her lying there. It scared me at first, but she looked so peaceful as though she were sleeping. I touched her hand and brushed her hair from her forehead just the way she’d always done for me when I was ill. I couldn’t believe that she was gone.
That evening, I found myself walking to the store for sugar. Who can explain why we do these things? I suppose it was something that had to be done, and I was trying to restore some sense to my chaotic day. I remember standing in the middle of an aisle, crying. I was remembering all the times that I’d been there with my Mom, laughing, as we strolled up and down the aisles. No one paid much attention to me as I stood holding a sack of sugar, head bowed, sobbing softly. Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder, softly at first, then a gentle pressure as I heard a soft, comforting whisper in my ear.
“Don’t cry anymore, sweetheart,” I heard in my Mother’s soft Czech. “I am all right now. Please don’t cry.”
I left the store feeling strangely comforted to know that my Mother came to me. I knew then that she would always be with me.
Not long after, I had a dream. I missed my Mother terribly and had gone to bed wishing for her. We used to sit and giggle like a couple of teenage girls, and I missed our “nightly chats”. In my dream I saw an Angel with beautiful long dark brown hair, wearing a long white robe handsomely embroidered with multicolored jewels. She descended, and there was my Mother standing in front of me.
She smiled and said, “I wish I was there with you.”
“Oh, Mama,” I replied as I went to her, “but you are! I hold you in my heart!”
We then embraced and I held her tight.
“I am sorry, but it is time to go,” the Angel said.
Before I knew what was happening, my Mother was gone and the Angel was holding me. I woke up, sat upright in bed, and could still feel the imprint of the Angel’s arms around me.
I firmly believe that it wasn’t just a dream, but God allowing Mama to come to me, then reassuring me that everything would be all right. Ever since then, I always remember a line from a movie I watched that stated: “Love never dies. Time cannot kill it, nor many miles. Not even death.” It is so true.

About the Author
Christina M. Meide lives in the small Midwest town of Hampton, Iowa and is the single mother of four children. She has been writing stories from the time she was first able to put sentences together, but has only recently begun her writing career with her first book, “Do We Know When Our Time Is Near?” and this book, “There’s No Place Like Home.” Christina is working on a third book, also stories from contributors from around the world, which she hopes to have released sometime in 2004. Other projects, at this time, are a screenplay and a fiction novel based on nearly twenty years of research using her own family genealogy.
