Cmdr. Phillips told the Emperor to have his men and woman lower their weapons also. This fight would be settled between the two leaders alone. The Emperor told his people to lower their weapons and if he lost the battle, then the leader of Earth Force and his people would be free to go. Cmdr. Phillips also ordered his marines not to retaliate if he lost the battle. He stated that Cmdr. Jamison would be in charge and she would have full authority if he were to be killed.
Cmdr. Phillips took of his weapons belt and handed it to one of the marines standing closest to him. Emperor Rand decided since Cmdr. Phillips had challenged him, that he himself would be able to choose the weapon of choice. The Emperor called for two Kusaak Rods to be brought to the arena.
Cmdr. Phillips had never heard of these weapons and leaned over to ask Cmdr. Slovan what they were. Cmdr. Slovan explained that they were small rods about six feet long with a sharp point on each end. They had a handle in the center to hold with either one or two hands. Cmdr. Phillips did not think this sounded too bad, but Cmdr. Slovan proceeded to add more to his explanation. The Kusaak Rods also had an electrical charge on each end. The harder they struck their target, the more powerful the electrical charge they released. Not only were you hit with a large pole that was pointed on one end to deliver a fatal wound, you were also electrocuted. Cmdr. Phillips was sorry that he had not heard about this weapon before. He believed it would be similar to a "pugel stick" that he had used in his military training.
The Supreme Commander stepped into the arena with the Laxon Emperor. They were both given a Kusaak Rod and the floor started to rotate and move up and down. The Kusaak Rods had a switch on the handle and when it was turned on, they gave a blue flash at each end. This meant they were charged and ready for combat.
Emperor Rand started rocking his weapon back and fourth and stepped closer to Cmdr. Phillips. The Commander took a defensive stance and the Emperor took a few small swings at him. He had been sitting in the small cockpit of the Eagle fighter for almost three days and his reflexes would be slowed. Cmdr. Phillips blocked the testing blows and asked the Emperor what the rules were to this game. The Emperor replied by telling the Commander that this was no game and there were no rules. He also said that this fight would be to the death, and he obviously had not lost any matches. With this said, the Emperor swung around and struck the Commander on his left arm. The pain from the shock almost made the Commander drop his weapon. Before the Commander could compose himself, the Emperor dropped to his knees and took a swing at his legs making contact and knocking the Commander down to the ground. The Commander was still dazed from the two hard blows, but all of his instincts and training told him to roll backwards and jump back up on his feet.
When the Commander landed on his feet the Emperor quickly rushed him. The Commander jumped to one side and made contact with the back of the Emperor with the Kusaak rod, causing him to fall face first into the ground. The rocking motion of the floor helped to throw the Emperor to the ground. Before the Emperor made contact with the ground he was bouncing back to his feet. As the Emperor turned to the Commander, he said that was a lucky move and it would not happen again. The Commander and Emperor Rand exchanged several blows, most of them being blocked by the other one, but some of them made contact. Most of the hits by the Kusaak Rods were light, because both men were succeeding in blocking the majority of the swings.
Emperor Rand rushed the Commander and drew back behind his head and took a full swing at Cmdr. Phillips. The Commander did not have a chance to block the attack. When the Kusaak rod struck its target, Cmdr. Phillips started to fall backwards. The Emperor quickly stepped forward and stabbed the Commander in the leg. With the Kusaak Rod sticking into the Commander’s leg, it was delivering a constant shock. When this happened, the Commander grabbed the Kusaak Rod that was sticking out of his leg and a shock ran into his hand and up his arm.
