"She knows! Jody knows!" Edmund fell back in his chair. "How did she find out?" His brows rose in surprise. "What was her reaction when she found out I was her father?" "I'm sorry to mislead you, what I meant to say, is that I told her about you and me, and that you asked me to marry you." He managed a reluctant smile. "How did she take it?" "She was thrilled," Lily, answered, "she said we belong together." His broad smile returned. "A girl after my own heart." Lily groaned and sat back. "It broke my heart when she expressed her one wish, to be at our wedding. I don't know if she can make it that long," she said, "she's in great shape now, but according to the doctors prognosis she can start--," she faltered, then rolled her eyes toward the ceiling, "she could be bed ridden. I didn't know what to tell her, so I explained that we had to wait until after the election. But all she wants is to be at our wedding. What are we going to do?" "Well," he clamped his jaw tight and stared into the darkened fireplace, "we know what the signs are, and so far she's had none. In fact, the other day she complained about gaining weight. I'd say she's holding her own. I wouldn't let her accompany me to San Francisco if I thought she couldn't make it." He lit his pipe, let out a puff of smoke, than tapped it into the ashtray. "Give me some time to think about this. Maybe we can have a mock ceremony, you know, a pretend service, this way she could," he shook his head from side to side, "that wouldn't be fair. She's been deceived long enough. No more lies. What's the chances," his eyes narrowed to slits, "that Henry will change his mind about giving you a divorce before the election?" "Are you kidding? He's not about to do anything to spoil his chances, Jody or no Jody. I have to respect his wishes; after all he did provide our daughter with a good home. I owe him that much. When I leave, he'll have nothing but the law. We'll have much, much more. We'll have each other.

About the Author
Born and raised in Chicago, Marilyn Stuart reared four daughters. Her first novel, Lily, garnered her a prize at the Southeastern Writers Assoc. Love and family relationships have always been her interest and serve as a basis for her novels.Her avocations, when not writing, are personal growth, interior decorating and card playing. She believes in living every day to the fullest and not taking herself too serious.
