A coolness emanated from her smoky olive eyes. She handed me a piece of paper folded in thirds and marred on the backside in several places. "I was wondering if this was something I should know about." One eyebrow went p ever so slightly, as if she were searching for an explanation. The letter, if one could call it that, was written, perhaps scribbled would better describe it, on low grade paper. Even as I read it, I could feel myself pale visibly. I read it three times, and only one word escaped my mouth in a hoarse whisper, "Levine!" In spite of the poor grammar and spelling, the note terrified me. My hand trembled as I held the paper and read it for the fourth time. "SWYNE!!! YOU kilt her. Yor NEXT!!!!" I slumped in my chair even though my pulse was racing and my palms felt sticky with perspiration. *** So, this is where she had spent the afternoon. I wondered how long she had been at the construction site and why she had come here. A sense of dread and foreboding filled me as the thought that I had been duped by her chased around in my head. She had indeed been a superb actress, patiently biding her time, and I had been a fool. A sense of urgency propelled me in the direction of my personal property within the development to see what acts of sabotage she had carried out. Equipment and lumber barricaded the door. "Is someone out there?" I heard her voice filled with fear and exasperation. "Help! Please, help me!" There was no possible way for her to escape without help. I tore away the obstacles in record time. She fell into my arms with a sigh of relief. "Oh Jack! Thank God you’re here!"
