Chapter 1
Jesus once said, A man who was building a house, laid it on a foundation on rock. The flood arose, and the stream of water beat against his house, and could not shake it, for it was planted on rock. Luke 6:47-49
What is the Bible?
The Bible is a book that has been proclaimed to be inspired by God that was written by man. In the Old Testament it is a record of man's journey from the beginning of creation up to the arrival of God's special messenger named Jesus. The New Testament in the Bible goes on and records some of the activities of His followers and the start of the Christian religion. The record shows us that the battle between good and evil has been going on since the beginning of time. The Bible is very accurate in recording the history of the Hebrew people. However, the Bible is much more then a history book. It is also a philosophy book on how to teach man how to succeed in the world. All the teachings in all the books on the subject of love, living, success, and failure can be found in one book. That book is the Bible. Any doctrine that teaches separation from God is a doctrine of evil. A teaching that teaches that God will punish us must be changed to the doctrine that God is teaching us.
The Bible is a good book to read and follow as long as we look at our Creator as a good loving God. He is not a God waiting for you to do wrong. He is one that is not separate from you, one that is totally involved in your development.
Man tends to make God in his image and appearance, rather than what the Bible teaches, "man in God's image and likeness."
Mythology or facts?
Facts must be separated from fiction. An explanation created with fiction will not be supported by facts, but only with more fiction. We end up so far from the truth we wonder how we got there. A fact we believe maybe later proved to be fictional. The reason is the lack of knowledge or information that was present during the time the information was being revealed. A perfect example of this, is when man believed that planet Earth was flat. It was only after acquiring more knowledge that this was proven to be incorrect.
The reason I am going into so much detail to prove to you that everything we see, not only in life, but also in the Bible that is taught as truth is not always correct. There are mistakes or misinterpretations due to translation of scriptures from one language to another. Fact must be separated from fiction. For the person who says, "I read the Bible literally," sometimes what is believed as true today is not necessarily true tomorrow. New information is always surfacing. Can these ideas be supported by facts that are known today? We must be willing to learn. The person with a closed mind cannot learn anything new. The logical mind must be used to acquire knowledge that is continually being revealed or communicated. Otherwise, life is based on living our life based on last years newspaper events. Life would be in great turmoil. People base their whole faith on information that was written more than five thousand years ago.
God accomplished His creation in six days and on the seventh day He rested. This was accepted as a historical event, and was accepted as fact. Today this story appears as unreal or fictional. Scientists have proven that our universe had a beginning, but it took billions of years to achieve. We recognize if God wanted to take six days. He could have, but why six days, why not two days, or one day, or three days? The other question is why did God have to rest? He is spirit. There is no reason for Him to get tired. When we use our logical mind, it tells us something is wrong with this part of the story. For thousands of years man believed that planet earth was the center of the universe. We know this is not true, because anyone who has studied any science knows that we are part of the galaxy called the Milky Way. There are many galaxies in the universe. It was further believed for thousands of years that the sun went around earth.
The story of Moses can be found in the book of Exodus.
History tells us that Moses was raised by a Pharaoh of Egypt. Moses was required to
leave Egypt when it was discovered he killed an Egyptian. (Exodus 2:11-15)
The story tells us that he had encountered a psychic event. He received a communication from God through a burning bush. Moses was told to go to the Pharaoh and tell him to let the Hebrew people go.
It is believed that the book of Genesis was written by Moses. No one was there to record the events when the world was created. We do not know if Moses learned about the story of creation and Adam and Eve directly from God, through inspired word, or this was the accepted belief of man at the time when Moses wrote the events down.
We can look at the events in two ways:
With the knowledge that we have available to us today.
To have some good strong belief people must be able to distinguish between fact and fiction. The story of creation would have made sense to Moses in his day. People worked six days and they rested on the seventh. It would not be hard to imagine that Moses believed that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. People passed on stories with the knowledge that they possessed at that time. It was either being written or told to them. With our logical mind, we can see that the story of creation was told by the people of that day. However, if the knowledge of today was known back when Moses was alive, the story of creation would have a different time span. Earth would not have been the center of the universe. It would have been a very small planet located in the outer bands of the galaxy called the Milky Way. We know now, Earth is one little planet in a galaxy that is one of a billion known galaxies.
Through archaeological discovery, we know that man appeared on this planet 100,000 to 500,000 years ago, not six or seven thousand years ago. You have heard the statement, "don't confuse me with the facts."
It is very hard for most people to change their positions in life when it comes to their beliefs, their jobs, and even their residence. The very thought of change scares most people. Many people stay in the same job or marriage hating every moment of every day but will not change because of fear. If your faith is shaky, your faith perhaps is based on fiction and myths, not on facts.
There are inconsistencies in the historical facts of the Bible. However, this does not distort the true message. Two main truths in the bible that are trustworthy are: There is God, and we should "Love our neighbor as ourselves," This is not fiction, this is a truth! We don't have to believe it by faith.
Knowledge develops wisdom. Knowledge must be used to expand wisdom. With wisdom, it will expand our belief in God. Knowledge is the foundation to understand God and to understand why we are here.
Most religions are based on mythology. Mythology is a fable, a story, based on a little truth if any, and a lot fiction. Pagan religions
