A WIND OF UNREST

While riding through the town their attention is drawn to the many merchant shops. "Johnny! There are so many items in the display windows. It sure must take a lot of money to satisfy city dwellers. Just what is so amusing?" "Josey. The apparel most of these folks are wearing is a sharp contrast to our simple garments. Nevertheless about all that we can afford are some peppermint sticks and lemon drops at Murray’s General Store."

The candy is a rare treat for them. Therefore with great delight they make each piece last as long as possible. Neither time nor money will allow them to indulge in the customary tastes of aristocrats. Still both Johnny and Josey are thrilled by the world about them. However, as the steam whistle blows aboard the Golden Era both lads realize that their time together is drawing to an end. Bringing the horse about they head for the river.

After purchasing his steam ticket Josey requests Johnny to accompany him to the gangplank. Lost for words the boys briefly stare eastward upon the mighty Missouri River. It appears wider and deeper in the distance. Yet in their midst the powerful currents of the swirling eddies is indicative of a force that will forever change their lives.

Turning to face one another they both begin to speak at once. Momentarily they laugh over their nervous clumsiness. But gradually their expressions become more solemn. "Josey. You are my beloved brother. I pray that God will be with you. Remember all that our parents have taught us and write when you can. Needless to say we have ignored the Wind of Unrest that spreads over the land more each day. May it not affect our future or embitter our happiness."

"Johnny. You should not complicate my leaving with political issues such as state rights and slavery. Besides, we are too young to be concerned about those matters. Be at peace my brother. Tomorrow those controversial affairs will be resolved. Furthermore your so-called Wind of Unrest will blow out to sea."

"Josey. I am not so sure." In the next instance the steam whistle on the Golden Era again resounds for all to board. The two brothers shake hands in farewell. However, in a subsequent embrace Johnny whispers his heartfelt feeling. "This is a spectacular opportunity for you. I sincerely hope that you win the horse race." "My dear brother. I thank you for your well-wishing. Also, I have never doubted your well-meaning."

While walking up the gangplank Josey turns and waves good-bye. "Johnny! Be mindful that our bridles and saddle blankets are to be saved for a special event in our lives. That is the wish of our parents. However, I do not think that they want you to look so sober. Perhaps you should become a politician! Meanwhile stop worrying. Nothing will ever change either of us. In any event be of good cheer. I shall return in the spring."

The order is given to raise the gangplank and to retrieve the mooring ropes. Thereafter with black smoke billowing from the stacks the paddle wheel begins to rotate churning the water. Slowly the Golden Era moves into the main channel of the river towards St. Louis.

Johnny remains on the dock until the imposing riverboat disappears around a far bend. For a moment or so he gives thought to Josey’s comment about returning in the spring. He loves his brother and a part of him already senses the loneliness caused by his departure. However, what disturbs him the most is a strange uneasy feeling that the Wind of Unrest will not blow out to sea. Rather it will progressively become more violent and unyielding.
