A famous Icelandic study, reported in 1976, indicated that 31 percent had felt that they had such an experience. Wayne State University psychologist, Robert Kastenbaum, asked 140 people; 45 percent said that they had such an experience.

When we are grieving, religious clichés and sentimental books with flowery scripts may be weak medicine. The existence of an afterlife cannot be proved, we tell ourselves. About the Author
As a young man, Tim Ward was a member of a Catholic religious order and studied at Concordia University of Montreal. Deciding that the life of a "monk" was not for him, he left the order after three years. He later studied at Arizona State University where he graduated in 1990 with a BA in English.
