About the Book

Ben and the Bully is a story about a boy who experiences feelings of rejection by his peers and how a bully makes life difficult for him at school. He is teased about his weight and his reading ability. Ben has a brief moment of "popularity" at a Halloween party with the help of his classroom teacher. He meets a handicapped boy, Nate, who moves to his school. Ben and Nate become friends and are able to include Bobby, the bully, near the end of the story in ways that reduce the negative actions Ben experienced. Ben and the Bully explores the feelings of children who have difficulty being accepted by peers and provides hope that they can be accepted.

Character illustrations for Ben and the Bully are spontaneous drawings by my two eleven-year-old granddaughters. It was a pleasure to have my four granddaughters express an interest in the development of the story. They were a source of encouragement for me to persist in the completion of the book and they provided valuable insights as we explored the characters to be included.
