The theater darkened as Janice took her seat. Mario Koontz sat in the seat immediately behind Janice. Koontz, had already seen the movie and knew exactly when he would shoot Janice. It was a movie filled with explosions and screeching cars and whining aircraft. There was one scene in particular during which all hell broke loose. It would easily cover the report of a forty-five and Koontz had a Baretta with a silencer. Piece of cake. Only a handful of moviegoers were in the theater. After all, this was a rerun and a matinee. The theater darkened. Janice and Mario settled back in their seats, one enjoying the movie, the other waiting impatiently. The moment was now at hand. Koontz pulled the revolver from its holster and laid it on his lap. He stared at Janice's neck, knowing exactly where he would put the barrel of the gun to insure instant death. The bullet would enter the back of her neck and exit through her forehead. He'd fired this shot many times before. It was always fatal. Koontz draped a handkerchief over the gun, and painstakingly inched it upwards. The movie screen exploded with activity and, as the sound level reached a cacophonous crescendo, Koontz slowly squeezed the trigger, his eyes wide with delight, his heart racing a mile a minute. A staccato crack interrupted the movie but was not heard by the audience. The killer settled back in his chair and remained there until the movie ended. When the lights came on, Janice rose from her seat and noted that the man sitting directly behind her had apparently fallen asleep. She smiled and wondered how anyone could sleep through that movie.

About the Author
Edward T. Gushee graduated from Williams College where he majored in English and minored in theater. He co-starred in several college productions with theater-mates John Frankenheimer (Hollywood director) and Stephen Sondheim (lyricist and composer). He acted in summer stock theater in Cape Cod. In 1951, Ted enlisted in the Air Force, piloted twenty-five combat missions over Korea and was awarded the Air Medal. Upon discharge, he spent a year in Hollywood under the stage name Richard Lowe before joining J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in Detroit where he spent the next thirty years. In 1988 he was appointed COO and a general manager of the Detroit office. Throughout his career, Ted was never far from a typewriter. In 1993 he retired to work on his writing, his golf, his tennis and his bridge. He has a modest wine cellar and enjoys cooking. He is married and has a son and a daughter. Ted’s first novel, Someone’s Picking The Daisies, was published by 1stBooks and was warmly received. Exciting, fast moving, involving. Guardian Devil is a sequel in the same genre.
