About the Book

I Am Still Standing chronicles the suffering, tribulation, and joy of a sixteen-year-old Greek from the small rural village of Coutsoherra, Greece -- to the jails and concentration camps of Italy, through the horrors of war, and the fear of being a fugitive. The setting moves from Greece in the early 1940’s to Italy by 1945, to Egypt, to Brazil, and then finally, the United States.

From his late teens into his twenties, Constantin Zotis has seen prisons, concentration camps, sinking ships, and the trials of a Greek immigrant in the United States after World War II. It is a story of human survival and perseverance that lifts one’s spirits and begs the question, "If I can -- you can. The spirit is in us all."

About the Author

Serving my native country of Greece as a patriot in Pyros, I was arrested by the Italian Military Police on November 4, 1941, accused of being a spy for the Greek Resistance Movement. I was later incarcerated by German troops and held in a "reprisal pool" at the age of sixteen. We ninety, the "pool," were to be executed in reprisal for the loss of German officers and men who were killed by the Greek Resistance.

Incarcerated in Italy and then moved to scheduled prisons in Germany just north of Rome, I simply walked away from the death train as it was stopped for investigation by the International Red Cross. Then, a fugitive, I was aided by the Swiss Legation in hiding out in Rome for the duration of the war.

I became a British air gunner, a member of the Greek Royal Air Force and then a farmer, so called, living in Brazil. I escaped that savage land to serve in the Merchant Marine only to have my ship intentionally scuttled. I finally became employed by an American vessel and ended my service on the sea in Newport News, Virginia. I end the book with my wedding day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
