About the Book

"Bob was born in Liberia, West Africa, and lived there for eight years before he came to America in 1970. He says that for his first eight years, he lived "in the jungle" and I have heard him describe his life in his rural village very vividly. His experiences in that environment are a source of comparison and contrast for him, enabling him to look at American culture from an unusual perspective." After Bob came to America, he began negotiating the American public school system. He spoke no English when he was placed in the second grade. He managed to overcome this considerable problem, however, with a few years of private tutoring, he eventually skipped the eighth grade and went on his way to graduating from high school. After high school, he worked for a few years and then joined the Navy for four years, from 1988-1992. His tour of duty in the Navy provided him with GI Bill benefits, enabling him to go to college."

"Deswin has a special rapport with different age groups. Deswin always gets the students emotionally and physically involved in his performances," --Dr. Niedzwiecki, Assistant Professor, UW - La Crosse.

"He [Mr. Gbala] has such an abundance of creative energy that, if he were somehow blocked in his creative endeavors, he might well explode!" --Dr. Laura Nelson, Chair, Professor, UW - La Crosse.

"In spite of his animation and energy he pours into his storytelling, none can be as fascinating as the true story of Gbala’s first eight years of life," -- Pat Moore, La Crosse Tribune.

". . . you have a knack for catching your audience’s attention. . . Your energetic storytelling style and brave, vivid examples motivated even students who have been yawning back in their chairs to sit up and pay respect," -- Annette White-Parks, Associate Professor, UW - La Crosse.

"Bob is a very dynamic and energetic storyteller whose intense pace captivates his audience through the whole show," -- Rosemary Pendleton, Storyteller/Library Assistant, La Crosse Public Library.
