About the Book

This book describes the author's high and low episodes from the onset of his bipolar disorder to the present, a period of forty years. Distinct personality changes occur during mood turbulence--all visualized as various aspects of Mr. Hyde. Thus, Mr. Hyde-high and Mr. Hyde-low are distinct in their behavior and expressions.

The goal of bipolars is to suppress highs and lows and live a mood stable life. As the book describes, this is difficult even for a doctor specialized in psychopharmacology. The consequences of repeated mood swings can be devastating, changing the course of the life of bipolars and people with recurrent depression.

The text includes much practical material for bipolar and depressive disorders. The last third of the book is a guide for achieving and maintaining a mood stable life. Diagnosis, patient responsibility, medications, shock therapy, and useful strategies for those affected and their families are contained here.

About the Author

Sam Steven Barklis, M.D. graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School in 1948. He spent three years in post-doctoral there and an additional two years at the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute. The author has published about 50 papers and abstracts. As a psychopharmacologist, he specializes in treating Mood and Anxiety Disorders at the Anxiety, Mood and Phobia Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

While an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Medical School, he had his first manic depressive episode over forty years ago. Luckily, a renowned physician in his department diagnosed the disorder and put him on Lithium. This was 17 years before the FDA approved Lithium for manic depression.

The text includes much practical material on depressive and manic depressive (Bipolar) disorders. The first portion is autobiographical; the latter describes the road needed for those who want to stay level for life.
