About the Book

Five Cherokee lie ritually slain, scalps shaved and faces tattooed in the style of a long vanished secret medicine society. The tribes say it is the work of a spirit creature called Uktena. But to B.I.A. agent Caleb Easton it has more to do with mystic inhabitants of ancient America who Mormons call Nephites.

When Caleb’s disturbing visions and Mormon past mark him as a suspect, forensic psychologist Ellen Masterson finds herself his hostage and sole ally. Determined to expose the real slayer and stop the butcherous rites, they track a grisly trail to sacred burial grounds in Oklahoma and finally to the outcast Mormon polygamy colonies of Mexico.

Like a colorful blanket from the Indian lands where this taut thriller is set, CIRCLE OF FIRE weaves Mormon folklore with Native American mysticism in a quest for a lost sacred treasure and a mythical killer whose crimes span more than a century.

About the Author

E.J. CAMPFIELD is a free-thinking religious skeptic who describes himself as a "practicing heretic." Ironically he is also a fifth-generation lineal descendant of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church.

The story line of Circle of Fire is spun off the strange Mormon folk legend of "The Three Nephites." Blending parallel mythologies and historical fact into a single dramatic tapestry, the author relates details of the often startling Mormon religion and equally absorbing American Indian cultures.

A former English teacher and ad agency executive, Campfield lives in Los Angeles where he is currently scripting a film version of Circle of Fire. A sequel titled Tukabachee is also in the works.
