In the night, Colleen had fallen asleep. Lizzette, ever watchful, slipped out of bed and tiptoed surreptitiously down the hall to the baby''s room, where for the first time she took Etienne in her arms. The night nanny slept soundly on the cot in the shadows.
"I’ll save you, come with me," she whispered frantically, then looked furtively around, her eyes bright with madness. Lizzette ran down the stairs, bumping into Jude on the way to the front door. She had difficulty getting the heavy door open.
Jude ran to Henri’s study and knocked loudly on the door. "Sir! Sir! Mistress Devereaux took the baby and run off to the cliffs!" he cried..
"Get Mama Jo, quick!" Henri yelled, "Get moving man!’" He ran to the door and saw her white dressing gown in the moonlight as Lizzette ran to the ridge.. Etienne’s screams were heard in the distance as Lizzette struggled to climb the incline, Henri quickly ran after them.
Lizzette’s voice was maniacal, "Stay away! I’ll jump! She hissed, backing toward the edge.
Henri stopped, hands raised, "Lizzette, come down. You don’t want to hurt yourself," he coaxed.
"No!" she shouted over the baby’s screams.
"Please, let me help you. Give Etienne to me. You don’t want to hurt Etienne, your child, our son?" he pleaded.
"The voices told me this is the time. I can’t wait any longer. Soon it’ll be too late! Don’t you see?" she said as her eyes widened with the dementia.

The Author is a retired Registered Nurse who raised three professional sons and a daughter. She spends her time writing, listening, learning and enjoying retirement and her grandchildren, whom she spoils and sends home with mom and dad.
